John Hughes, the man who brought us Ferris Bueller´s Day off and The breakfast Club, died aged 59 earlier this week. I thought a couple of quotes from some of the most memorable films ever made would be a cool way to celebrate the passing of a guy who shaped my eighties. The Breakfast Club
John Bender: “Screws fall out all the time, the world is an imperfect place.”
Richard Vernon: You think about this: when you get old, these kids – when *I* get old – they’re going to be running the country.
Carl: Yeah.
Richard Vernon: Now this is the thought that wakes me up in the middle of the night. That when I get older, these kids are going to take care of me.
Carl: I wouldn’t count on it.
John Bender: “Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe?”
Ferries Bueller´s Day Off:
Boring Economics Teacher: “In 1930, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, in an effort to alleviate the effects of the… Anyone? Anyone?… the Great Depression, passed the… Anyone? Anyone? The tariff bill? The Hawley-Smoot Tariff Act? Which, anyone? Raised or lowered?… raised tariffs, in an effort to collect more revenue for the federal government. Did it work? Anyone? Anyone know the effects? It did not work, and the United States sank deeper into the Great Depression. Today we have a similar debate over this. Anyone know what this is? Class? Anyone? Anyone? Anyone seen this before? The Laffer Curve. Anyone know what this says? It says that at this point on the revenue curve, you will get exactly the same amount of revenue as at this point. This is very controversial. Does anyone know what Vice President Bush called this in 1980? Anyone? Something-d-o-o economics. “Voodoo” economics. ”
Ed Rooney: [Whistling for the dog with a vase in his hands] “Come here doggy! Look what Uncle Ed’s got for you, you little fucker!”
Ferris: “Not that I condone fascism, or any -ism for that matter. -Ism’s in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should believe in himself. I quote John Lennon, “I don’t believe in Beatles, I just believe in me.” Good point there. After all, he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. I’d still have to bum rides off people.”
Let that be a lesson to us all to ditch school, scive off work and have fun!
