So what if Gwyneth´s Goop website sucks?

Gwyn in Pink Oscar Horror

Gwyn in Pink Oscar Horror

Starting an innocent website on cooking and diets got Gwyneth Paltrow in a whirl of negative media attention.

Who does she think she is, dishing out recipes, parenting advice and places to go-tips? fumed the likes of The Times. Toronto’s The Globe and Mail spluttered: “Why is it called Goop? Perhaps ‘Any Old Load of Rubbish’ and ‘Learn From Me, Ungrateful Peasant’ were both taken.” (which I thought was kinda hilarious)

Actually, AnyOldLoadofRubbish.com would have been much cheaper, because four letter .com domains are rare and expensive! So I guess Gwyneth, having sunk over a 100.000 dollars into this domain name probably has a Master Plan. Not so you´d notice, when you look at her website, but maybe drivelling on about all the wonderful friends she has is step one in the larger scheme of things, like South Parks Underpants Gnomes:

But all joking aside, why on earth shouldn´t Gwynny set up her own website? Lots and lots of people set up websites all the time about their pets, their backyard or cooking without any training. I´m not a Gwyneth fan, still haven´t gotten past that terrible Oscar dress and acceptance speech, all those years ago, but I really don´t see what all the fuss is about. She´s not claiming she´s the next Ghandi, she simply wants to share a couple of spaghetti recipes! And, being Rich&Famous, she can buy an expensive domain to do it!

And btw her recipe for turkey meatballs sounds divine and I can´t wait to try it! (didn´t she used to be a rabid vegan?)

Anne Hathaway

I adore the Oscars. Can´t wait to see what everybody´s wearing!
This year´s

top Oscar dresses:

Anne Hathaway, incredibly elegant in a silver and cream strapless Armani Prive dress.

Angelina Jolie in a very simple black strapless number also by Elie Saab, but with earrings to die for!

Worst Oscar dress

Not so great: Kate Winslet in a matronly gray made for her by Yves Saint Laurent. Apparently even her eight year old daughter Mia said “I need to talk to you about the dress–it was gray.”

Heidi Klum looked as if she was wearing a Project Runway reject, you know from one of those episodes they have to make a dress from popcorn or orange peel. Actually it was by hot French designer Roland Mouret, he of Posh´s Moon dress, but this was not a flattering look at all.

Jessica Biel Oscars 2009

Kate shares her Worst dress with another unlikely candidate, the ever lovely Jessica Biel who looked drab and, dare I say it? fat in a clownesk, illfitting, sagging Prada. So, what did you think?

Penelope´s 2009 Oscar win & dress!

Penelope Cruz Oscar dress 2009

Penelope Cruz Oscar dress 2009

I was very happy to see Penelope Cruz win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Well deserved, she´s a great actress, blablabla. But that dress…. Last year´s dress was such a knock out, that this year´s was bound to disappoint. Well, it did. What the hell is that? She looks like a little girl on her way to Holy Communion, rather than one of sexiest women alive! Also, it could have been her wedding dress. Maybe she´s trying to tell Javier Bardem something?

And the Oscar goes to… Matilda Rose Ledger!

Heath Ledger as The Joker

Heath Ledger as The Joker

Sometimes it´s hard to be the Big favorite, and sometimes it pays off! The Dark Knight didn´t go home with eight Oscars, but it did snag the Big One: Heath Ledger got his well deserved posthumous prize as Best Supporting Actor for his iconic role as The Joker.

According to Oscar protocol, the statuette will eventually go to his three-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose Ledger. According to the academy, the statuette will be held in trust for Matilda by her mom, actress Michelle Williams, until she turns eighteen,” “At that point, she may execute what we call an heir’s agreement and keep the statuette forever – or, if she chooses not to do that, it will return to us.” an Academy official stated.

There were a lot of rumors about who would accept the award, and in the end the prize was accepted very fittingly by Ledger´s family. “Tonight we are choosing to celebrate and be happy for what he has achieved,” said Heath´s mom Sally Bell, who accepted the award together with Heath’s dad, Kim Ledger, and sister, Kate, to a standing ovation on the stage of Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre.

When asked whether Matilda knew about all the Oscar fuss, Heath´s mom commented that Matilda´s mom Michelle Williams keeps her out of the spotlights as much as possible and that the little girl didn´t have a clue.

Heath´s daughter does bear a strong resmblance to her late dad “You just have to look at her to know that she is totally like her daddy.” Said an emotional Sally Bell.

Javier Bardem snubbing the Oscars?

Feb 22, 2009 Author: Liz | Filed under: Celebrities, Oscars 2009
Pene & Javier bardem

Pene & Javier bardem

Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz like to keep their private business private. However, he may be taking things a bit too far  at the Oscars! Apparently, he´s not going to show because he won Best Supporting Actor last year for No country for old men and by tradition would be presenting this year´s Best Supporting Actress with her award. Yep, that could be his Spanish calabaza, Penelope for her part in Vicky Cristina Barcelona! He doesn´t want to present the award because he might lose control and kiss her in front of 40 million people. Oh go on! It would be so cute!

The Oscars: Frozen River

Jan 25, 2009 Author: Liz | Filed under: Oscars 2009

Desperation knows no borders is the tagline for this film about two average women who turn to people trafficking to support their families.

The film showed up on quite a few Best Movie of the Year lists and won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2008. Director and writer Courtney Hunt wanted to make this movie about the the universal love of parents for their children and the lengths they will go to to protect and care for these kids.

White trailer mom Jay teams up with a Mohawk girl, Lila, who lives in a reservation on the border between the U.S. and Canada. Jay is broke after her man ran off with their life savings, Lila is trying to get her baby back from her mother in law. They need money for their families and the frozen river seems the ideal way to do it: they start smuggling illegal Chinese and Pakistani immigrants from Canada into the States. At first, the money’s good and all goes well, but then their luck starts to run out.

What a great film!!! Not one false note, no melodrama, no hammy, melodramatic effects. This is a gritty, interesting and moving tale about people down on their luck, struggling to get a new deal. There’s a bit of a Thelma and Louise-moment, but even then events don’t spiral out of the realm of reality.  Loved it!

Director/writer and probably caterer and allround dogsbody Hunt must be feeling pretty good about herself right now. Her directorial debut, which she also wrote and produced, got no fewer than TWO Academy Award nominations!

Little known actress Melissa Leo, who plays Jay, was nominated for best actress and Hunt received an original screenplay nomination. How cool is that?

“It is such a great thing, that you can walk around with your story, get your little money together and make a film and then end up there being counted along with all the big shots,” Hunt said in an interview with IHT. “I can’t think of any other industry, or any other country, where that seems possible.”

Hunt’s nominations seem indicative of a shift in the Academy: no longer is the Oscar ceremonie a competition between blockbusters, but more and more small, independent films are making it into the finals. It’s going to be an exciting year!
